Reconnect

For Cut Me Up Magazine’s first call, I created eighteen original collages. They were in some ways psychological self-portraits. They explored personal experiences; rituals; spirituality; themes of growth, deterioration and rebirth; and secret dreams. I saw them as an offering. Something for others to consider, absorb and then deconstruct. Readers were asked to respond by cutting, modifying or transforming them to make new works of their own.

With Laurent Seljan’s call for Issue 9: Scars and All, we have once again returned to self-portraiture. The issue’s artists have shared who they are—their vulnerabilities, their desires, how they perceive themselves. What better time than now to return to Cut Me Up’s roots? To relate, respond and connect.

Consider how these self-portraits resonate with you. It may be the materials, the colors, the textures or the images. It may be what the artist is expressing about their life, how they see themselves, or how that relates to how you see yourself. For Cut Me Up Issue 10, the only criteria are to find the connections. And then respond.

To submit artwork responses:

  • Connect. What resonates with you in these self-portraits? How do you relate to what the artists are saying about themselves and their lives? Develop a rapport—aesthetically, conceptually or psychologically—and then respond.

  • All eligible submissions must incorporate some portion or portions of Cut Me Up: Issue 9.


Issue 10 Curator Andrea Burgay

Andrea Burgay is the founder and editor of Cut Me Up Magazine and also explores collage concepts and processes through interviews and curatorial projects.

In her Brooklyn, NY studio, Andrea creates collage works by adding and removing layers of handmade and collected materials. These works present a physical manifestation of the passage of time and evoke cycles of destruction and renewal. Andrea has exhibited work in galleries in Genoa, Paris, Warsaw, New York and throughout the United States.
